Kitchen Utensils

Research and Ergonomics

An ageing Population

User studies and product evaluation found using some utensils from a seated position could induce a non-neutral hand position. Applying the necessary forces from this posture may risk wrist strain, particularly as we get older.

Concepts

A range of ideas explored how user comfort and engagement with the utensils could be improved. This involved experimenting with handle shapes, grip positions and alternative mechanisms.

Design Communication

A selection of concepts were drawn and sketch modelled to allow the market research group to provide feedback on the designs.

SAFETY and FAmiliarity

Users showed preference for a pizza cutter that suggested increased protection from the blade and a whisk that used a traditional mechanism they were familiar with.

Harnessing Geometry

The final pizza cutter and rotary whisk make use of a simple circular form to allow the handle to be gripped from multiple angles. Improving user comfort across a range of postures.
